Remaining less touristy adds to its unique charm.

The exact construction date of Özkonak Underground City is unknown, but it is believed to have been used extensively between the 8th century BCE and the 10th century CE, similar to other underground cities in the region. Early Christians used these underground cities to escape persecution by the Roman Empire. One of the unique features of Özkonak Underground City is its ventilation systems. The underground rooms and corridors are constantly supplied with fresh air through ventilation shafts leading to the surface. Additionally, water wells and secret passages ensure the city's defensive and survival needs are met. These engineering marvels highlight how well-planned Özkonak was as a defense and living space.

Another notable aspect of Özkonak Underground City is its large stone doors and trap systems. These doors were used to protect against enemy attacks.
